Personal Aspects of Lifetime Planning
- When the time comes that I can no longer protect my child due to their disability, where will they live and with whom?
- After finishing school, will my child be able to find employment? Should I plan for a vocational training program for them?
- Where will my child live in the future? Will they live alone, get married, live with friends, or live in a supported living arrangement?
- How should I plan for their leisure activities, employment, communication with other family members, medical care, and any necessary treatments?
The services are to be planned as a group and are intended to drive toward a result—they should not be haphazard or scattershot activities, but coordinated with each other to achieve that outcome or result. Preparing children with disabilities to “lead productive and independent adult lives, to the maximum extent possible” is one of IDEA’s stated objectives.
